Nigerian Government pause $300 helicopter landing levy

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on Friday, announced the temporary suspension of the controversial $300 helicopter landing fee. The decision came after the Airline Operators of Nigeria, AON, rejected the fee, insisting that it was commercially injurious. A statement by the spokesman of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Odutayo Oluseyi, said a committee has been charged to look into the issues raised by concerned stakeholders and submit a report before the end of June. The statement reads, “Following a meeting with the AON executive on the issue bordering on Helicopter landing levies collection at Aerodromes, Helipads, Air Strips, etc, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has temporarily suspended the enforcement granted Messers NAEBI Dynamic Concept Ltd, by the Federal Government, as consultants to collect such levies. “The suspension is with effect from 30th May, 2024. Former Arsenal and Manchester United striker, Robin van Persie has been appointed the new head coach of Heerenveen. This is the first managerial job for the 40-year-old.  Van Persie retired from football in 2019, following a spell with his boyhood club Feyenoord. A man killed for not given #200 bribe by a police in Bayelsa state

A policeman in Bayelsa State has killed a driver identified as Benalayefa Bako Asiayei, over his alleged refusal to give N200 bribe.  The incident happened along Azikoro road in Yenagoa, the state capital.  Death of the driver has attracted condemnation from the public and human rights groups. The trigger-happy cop, who is attached to the police special patrol team in the state Operation Doo Akpo’ is yet to be identified as at the time of filling the report. The late Asiayei, who is said to be 40 year-old and father of three was an electrician who used his car for commercial purposes in the evening to get additional income for his family needs.

The 43-year-old succeeds Emma Hayes, who led the Blues to 14 major trophies during a 12-year spell in charge. Fire devastated wooden market in Lagos

Fire on Wednesday gutted several wooden shanties at the Tejuosho Market, Yaba area of Lagos State and destroyed properties worth millions of naira. Fortunately, at the time of filing this report, there was no loss of life recorded and no injury sustained. The fire, according to reports, broke out at the market located along Tejuosho Canal, comprising shops and residences, at about 12:30 pm.

CBN reveals position on revoking licenses of Opay, Moniepoint, other fintech banks

The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, said that the apex bank has not revoked the licenses of Moniepoint, Opay, and other fintech banks operating in Nigeria. Cardoso disclosed this in a communiqué from Tuesday’s Monetary Policy Committee meeting in Abuja. He noted that CBN is not against fintechs.  His reaction comes weeks after the bank restricted them over allegations of accounts being used for illicit foreign exchange transactions. Cardoso stressed the need for CBN to strengthen financial regulations to check against leakages. “CBN is not against fintechs and has not revoked the license of any fintech organization. However, he stressed the need to strengthen regulation in the sector to check against leakages”, he said. He added, “It’s our responsibility to ensure it (the banking system) remains sound, safe, and fit for purpose.”

Court restrained Governor Alia from probing Ortom

A  Benue State High Court has restrained the Benue State Government from probing the administration of the former Governor of the state, Chief Samuel Ortom.  It is recalls that the Benue State Government recently set up a commission of inquiry into the funds (income and expenditure) of Benue State Government from May 29, 2015, to May 28, 2023, to probe the immediate past administration of former Governor Ortom in the state.  The order stopped the panel from sitting, pending the hearing and determination of a motion on notice filed by former Governor Samuel Ortom. The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio announced this on Wednesday during a joint session of the National Assembly. He also announced that the president will not address the House but only flag off the new anthem.  Speaker Tajudeen Abbas said the president cancelled the address because June 12 is the official Democracy Day.

President Bola Tinubu has arrived at the National Assembly Complex as part of his itinerary to commemorate the 25 years of unbroken democracy in Nigeria. Tinubu’s motorcade arrived at the National Assembly at about 11:57am and he’s yet to enter the chamber. Shortly after the president’s arrival, the Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, alongside the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, entered the chamber. Mr Akpabio announced that the President would not address the chamber but only listen to the Old National Anthem. He urged the lawmakers to download the new anthem. However, the President, thereafter, made a brief speech to the lawmakers.  This is coming amid confusion from the Presidency over conflicting statements of Tinubu addressing a joint session of the National Assembly. On Monday, the National Assembly had announced that it would hold a special joint session on Wednesday to mark the 25th anniversary of democracy in Nigeria.

The Organised Labour has declined  a fresh minimum wage proposal by the Nigerian Government. reports has it that the Organised Labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, rejected the offer of the Federal Government to pay N60,000 as new minimum wage,. It was also gathered that labour had shifted grounds from its N497,000 proposal to N494,000.  A prominent member of the Tripartite Committee for the negotiation of a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers revealed that the Federal Government and the Organised Private Sector side of the talks proposed a N60,000 monthly minimum wage as against the N57,000 they tabled last week when the committee resumed negotiations. It is also recalls that the government had initially proposed N48,000 and N54,000, which were also rejected by Organised Labour. A Kano State High Court has restrained the Police, the Department of State Services, DSS, and the Nigerian military from removing  the reinstated Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II. The Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu-led court gave the ruling in reaction to a case filed by the emir alongside the four kingmakers of Kano: Madakin Kano Yusuf Nabahani; Makaman Kano Ibrahim Sarki Abdullahi; Sarkin Bai Mansur Adnan and Sarkin Dawaki Maituta Bello Tuta. The Senator representing Ondo South Senatorial District, Jimoh Ibrahim has announced the formal withdrawal of a lawsuit filed to seek nullification of the primary election that produced Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. An Enugu State High Court presided over by Justice C.I Nwobodo has threatened to jail the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu, for alleged contempt of court. A Form Order 48, dated May 23, 2024, sighted by DAILY POST, is consequent upon alleged disobedience to an order of court. It was filed by one Mrs Theresa Nnulika Chuba through her Attorney, Mr. Oboli Fred Esq. The Enugu State Commissioner of Police is expected to obey the directive of the court in respect to orders contained in suit No. E/879/2022 and E/301/2024, else he will be guilty of contempt of court. Orjinze had ingested 111 wraps of cocaine, which he excreted after days of observation in the agency’s custody following his arrest at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) Abuja, the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, said in a statement.  The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 48-year-old france-bound ‘businessman’, Emmanuel Okechuku Orjinze for drug trafficking. Babafemi said, “Okechukwu who also claims he is a professional footballer in Europe was arrested on Tuesday 21st May during the outward clearance of Air France flight AF 878 from Abuja to Paris, France. “After a body scan confirmed he ingested illicit drugs, he was taken into custody where he excreted a total of 111 pellets of cocaine that weighed 1.603 kilograms over a period of three days. The suspect claimed he does business in the maritime sector while still scouting for any European football club to engage him.”

Mosque Collapses In Lagos

  The incident happened in the Papa Ajao area of Mushin on Sunday afternoon during the prayer time (Zuhr prayer) and resulted in casualties and injuries. Many worshippers are feared dead while several persons are believed to be trapped in the rubble after a mosque collapsed in Lagos, southwest Nigeria. However, multiple videos seen by SaharaReporters show how some bodies were being recovered from the collapsed building. The number of casualties could not be ascertained when filing this report. No official statement has been issued by any relevant agency about the incident. Building collapse is common in Lagos State and many of them are tragic. At least 61 buildings collapsed across Nigerian states in 2022. Lagos State tops the list with a record of 20 incidents, according to the Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) report.

Illegal structures along Jos-Bukuru waterways demolishes by Plateau sanitation agency

The Plateau State Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency has said it cleared drains and removed illegal structures built on waterways on Jos-Bukuru metropolis to forestall flooding. The Director General, PEPSA, Samuel Dapiya, said this during an interview on Sunday in Jos. Mr Dapiya explained that the demolition of illegal structures along the waterways was done in collaboration with the Jos Metropolitan Development Board to ensure the free flow of water to prevent flooding resulting from blocked channels. He said the effort was also aimed at ensuring that drains in the metropolis were de-silted and cleared of waste that often caused avoidable diseases and illnesses. He said the agency covered a 115 road distance in the exercise.
