The trying times have continued for the governor of Benue state, Samuel Ortom, as gunmen have reportedly attacked his village.
Sources report that the unknown gunmen at the weekend invaded the governor’s village, killing a couple
Police spokesman in the state, ASP Moses Yamu, who confirmed the incident, said Mr Joseph Msen Akosu and his wife were shot dead in Agasha area of Guma Local Government Area.
He said the gunmen, after killing the couple, burnt their bodies beyond recognition before the police arrived at the scene and recover empty shell of rifle at the scene. He further explained that the mission of the arsonist against the couple could not be immediately ascertained.
Meanwhile, tragedy struck on Monday, May 30, as gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen invaded Tse Aondo and Tse Ankou communities in Benue state, allegedly killing seven persons. Daily Sun reports that the anti-riot police arrived at the scene after a distress call, but the gunmen had fled already. The police reportedly recovered two expended shells of 7.62mm ammunition from the scene. For fear of further attacks, residents of the two communities have deserted their homes to take refuge in neighboring communities. Report has it that the attack might be a reprisal over the disappearance of an unidentified herdsman who went missing after he visited Gbeji market within the communities on May 8. However, security sources said the incident had no link with the man’s disappearance. The state police command said it was on top of the situation as its Criminal Investigation Department has commenced probe of the incident.
